Subnautic
: bio
first appeared in San Francisco
as the Neo Trio in 1995. Formed as a collaboration of several SF Bay
Area's jazz musicians to explore the boundaries between the contemporary
rhythms of trip-hop, jungle and drum-and-bass and the spontaneity
and improvisation of jazz, the trio soon regrouped and renamed.
After
being nominated for a WAMMIE for BEST NEW JAZZ GROUP in October
2000, keyboardist Jacob
Elijah Aginsky said in an interview "...that's what's so
exciting about Subnautic is that it's the music of the day while
retaining the integrity and spirit of creative improvisation. We
play to a packed house at Bruno's and it's like a concert, and then
we pack up and go play the same music at the chill-out room of a
rave and everyone's dancing." Drummer Eric Garland agreed.
"What we're trying to do is create a musical space", he
says. "It doesn't matter whether we're classified under acoustic
trip-hop or live down-tempo . . if people come away from our shows
with a sense of having traveled somewhere, then that's all we need."
